Hitch Hiker™ Dog Backpack Carrier

lightweight, technical dog carrier

Color

Selected: Basalt Gray

Share even more adventures with your canine sidekick with the Hitch Hiker™ Dog Backpack Carrier – a lightweight, technical dog carrier designed so dogs can hitch a ride when needed. The dual locking zippers create a wide opening for easy loading and unloading between trail time and backpack time. Once in the pack, the integrated harness keeps dogs secure and allows them to get comfortable and face forward to see the trail ahead. Cinch straps add extra security and keep dog close to your back when loaded. Air mesh side panels at the base boost air flow for temperature management.

Use the external grab handle to lift and shoulder the pack. Once on, the pack distributes weight evenly for the human carrying the load, with padded shoulder straps, breathable back panel, adjustable torso length, and a supportive hipbelt for all-day comfort. Pockets on the hip belt give quick access to essentials like pick-up bags, treats, and most phones. Stash a soft flask, packable bowl, or extra layer in the external zippered stretch pocket at the base of the pack.

Available in three sizes based off your dog’s girth measurement, and comfortably accommodates dogs up to 40 lbs. Hip belt fits waists 21-58" (53-149 cm).

Frequently Asked Questions

The Hitch Hiker™ works best for dogs who need occasional assistance during outings with their human. If your dog tires before you do, faces mobility challenges, or maybe even likes to watch the world from a higher vantage point, the Hitch Hiker™ provides a comfortable, secure solution.

We always recommend consulting with your veterinarian if you have specific questions about your dog's health conditions or whether a backpack style carrier is appropriate for their particular needs.

The Hitch Hiker™ comes in three sizes: XXS, XS, and S. Sizing is based on your dog's girth measurement (the circumference around the widest part of their ribcage). The human hip belt fits waists 21-58" (53-149 cm).

The Hitch Hiker™ comfortably accommodates dogs up to 40 lbs / 18 kg. This guidance is less about structural limitations and more about sizing and ensuring comfort for both you and your dog.

The Hitch Hiker™ has been designed with your dog's comfort in mind. We've consulted with veterinarians during the design process, and there were no concerns identified with the vertical positioning of dogs in this carrier. The integrated harness system provides proper support while allowing natural movement of your dog's front legs.

We intentionally designed the Hitch Hiker™ with your dog facing forward and in the same direction you're traveling to create a shared experience. This forward-facing orientation allows your dog to see where you're both going, and honors their natural curiosity about what’s ahead while keeping them secure and comfortable.

That said, every dog is unique – if you have specific concerns about your dog's spine, joints, or other health conditions, we recommend consulting with your veterinarian for personalized guidance.

Every dog has different comfort and endurance levels. We recommend starting with short 15-30 minute sessions to help your dog adjust, gradually increasing duration as they become more comfortable.
As a general guideline, you can give your dog a break every 30-45 minutes, especially during longer outings. These breaks allow them to stretch, walk, relieve themselves, and drink water. Some dogs may need more frequent breaks, while others might be content in the pack for longer periods. Stay in tune with any signals your dog gives – restlessness, whining, or repositioning frequently may indicate they need a break.
During breaks, completely remove your dog from the carrier, allowing them to move naturally. These pauses also give you the chance to readjust the carrier, check for any pressure points or discomfort, and rest your own muscles.

We've designed the Hitch Hiker™ with air mesh side panels at the base to provide airflow. This helps manage your dog's temperature during activity, reducing the risk of overheating. If hiking in warmer temperatures, it’s a good idea to take more frequent breaks from the pack to have a chance to stretch their legs and hydrate.

Perfect for my 16 year old Jack Russell

We love this backpack! My dog Eddie is 16 and can't keep up like he used to and this pack allows us to still take him on adventures. We let him walk and run until he tires out and is ready to get into the backpack. It took him a little while to get used to getting inside, but now that he has been carried around a few times, the process is super easy. The pack is very well built and the extra hip pockets for gear are a handy addition.

    Comfortable for dog and human

Love this pack! It is comfortable to wear, and my pup (a baby golden retriever) is very comfortable in it. Loading the pup into the pack is easy with the side zips. I wear it "kangaroo pouch" style (on the front of my body) with my little guy.

I almost never post reviews but ...

Buying this was our 5th attempt at finding a bike carrier or backpack to take our dog along on rides. Within 5 minutes of our first attempt at getting her accustomed to it, she was zipped in and I was walking around with her. In about another 10 minutes we were on the bike and on our way to the beach. All it took was a bit of coaxing with her favorite treat -- chicken. After letting her out at the beach, she cooperated getting back in it for the ride home. Wow! What a difference from any of the others!!!!

My take on why this worked for her is that the snug fit is very stable and secure as you walk or ride.

Buying this was our 5th attempt at finding a carrier or backpack so we can take our dog with us on bike rides. The very first time we tried using it, we had her in it within 5 minutes bribing her with chicken -- her favorite treat. About 10 minutes later we were on our bikes for a ride to the beach. We let her out at the beach to run around a bit and had no trouble getting her back into it -- with more chicken.

My take on why this worked better than any of the other options is that at least for our dog, the snug fit simply feels more secure and stable than other options we've tried.
