Hitch Hiker™ Dog Backpack Carrier

lightweight, technical dog carrier

Color

Selected: Basalt Gray

Share even more adventures with your canine sidekick with the Hitch Hiker™ Dog Backpack Carrier – a lightweight, technical dog carrier designed so dogs can hitch a ride when needed. The dual locking zippers create a wide opening for easy loading and unloading between trail time and backpack time. Once in the pack, the integrated harness keeps dogs secure and allows them to get comfortable and face forward to see the trail ahead. Cinch straps add extra security and keep dog close to your back when loaded. Air mesh side panels at the base boost air flow for temperature management.

Use the external grab handle to lift and shoulder the pack. Once on, the pack distributes weight evenly for the human carrying the load, with padded shoulder straps, breathable back panel, adjustable torso length, and a supportive hipbelt for all-day comfort. Pockets on the hip belt give quick access to essentials like pick-up bags, treats, and most phones. Stash a soft flask, packable bowl, or extra layer in the external zippered stretch pocket at the base of the pack.

Available in three sizes based off your dog’s girth measurement, and comfortably accommodates dogs up to 40 lbs. Hip belt fits waists 21-58" (53-149 cm).

Frequently Asked Questions

The Hitch Hiker™ works best for dogs who need occasional assistance during outings with their human. If your dog tires before you do, faces mobility challenges, or maybe even likes to watch the world from a higher vantage point, the Hitch Hiker™ provides a comfortable, secure solution.

We always recommend consulting with your veterinarian if you have specific questions about your dog's health conditions or whether a backpack style carrier is appropriate for their particular needs.

The Hitch Hiker™ comes in three sizes: XXS, XS, and S. Sizing is based on your dog's girth measurement (the circumference around the widest part of their ribcage). The human hip belt fits waists 21-58" (53-149 cm).

The Hitch Hiker™ comfortably accommodates dogs up to 40 lbs / 18 kg. This guidance is less about structural limitations and more about sizing and ensuring comfort for both you and your dog.

The Hitch Hiker™ has been designed with your dog's comfort in mind. We've consulted with veterinarians during the design process, and there were no concerns identified with the vertical positioning of dogs in this carrier. The integrated harness system provides proper support while allowing natural movement of your dog's front legs.

We intentionally designed the Hitch Hiker™ with your dog facing forward and in the same direction you're traveling to create a shared experience. This forward-facing orientation allows your dog to see where you're both going, and honors their natural curiosity about what’s ahead while keeping them secure and comfortable.

That said, every dog is unique – if you have specific concerns about your dog's spine, joints, or other health conditions, we recommend consulting with your veterinarian for personalized guidance.

Every dog has different comfort and endurance levels. We recommend starting with short 15-30 minute sessions to help your dog adjust, gradually increasing duration as they become more comfortable.
As a general guideline, you can give your dog a break every 30-45 minutes, especially during longer outings. These breaks allow them to stretch, walk, relieve themselves, and drink water. Some dogs may need more frequent breaks, while others might be content in the pack for longer periods. Stay in tune with any signals your dog gives – restlessness, whining, or repositioning frequently may indicate they need a break.
During breaks, completely remove your dog from the carrier, allowing them to move naturally. These pauses also give you the chance to readjust the carrier, check for any pressure points or discomfort, and rest your own muscles.

We've designed the Hitch Hiker™ with air mesh side panels at the base to provide airflow. This helps manage your dog's temperature during activity, reducing the risk of overheating. If hiking in warmer temperatures, it’s a good idea to take more frequent breaks from the pack to have a chance to stretch their legs and hydrate.

    Darcy's ride

My dog loves to go hiking with me, but gets tired pretty quickly because she's a little 6 pound pomeranian. This backpack is great! In the past I have just carried her when she gets tired, but that can get awkward after awhile. She loves sitting in the backpack, and has even fallen asleep in it. Love this thing!

    Perfect backpack

We are using the hitch hiker for couples weeks now and we just love it! Our mini aussi puppy of 10 pounds fit perfectly in the xsmall. We add couple hike and bike ride and it’s really confortable for both of us! Easy in and easy out, large range of adjustement but it might be difficult to fit on a big guy:) but my husband and daugther offer 9 years old can both adjust it perfectly for their size. We love It make the outdoor more accessible for the pups!

Great Quality, Sad To Return It!

Per usual, Ruffwear has outdone themselves with this pack. All of the details made this extremely comfy for the humans AND pup... even though he didn't fit and we sadly had to return it!

Our boy is 42 pounds and a lanky mix of shepherd, malinois, husky, and mini poodle. Despite the fact that he immediately began to snooze in the backpack while we tested it around the house, the harness felt too snug around his chest and shoulders for long-term comfort. His chest and neck also stuck out of the pack awkwardly due to his length. Since we were hoping to use this on longer mountain bike rides, we made the tough decision to return it.

Any chance you will be making a size Medium for the longer dogs out there, Ruffwear? We'd buy one in a heartbeat! :)

    Very comfortable!

This backpack is just what we needed. We love to go hiking, but our Scotty gets tired after a few kilometres. So this backpack has been the answer. It is really comfortable to wear, and the adjustments are easy to make. Digby our Scottish Terrier thinks getting a ride is wonderful. He seems very comfortable and content! Just a word about the sizing. We went with size S, but our dog measured on the high end of the XS. I am very happy we decided to go bigger because he only just fits in the size S, I feel a more comprehensive sizing guidance would be beneficial. Otherwise, the quality of the product is great. We love Ruffwear gear, it lives up to our dog’s active lifestyle perfectly.
