Hitch Hiker™ Leash

portable hitch & leash combo

Color

Selected: Slate Blue

The Hitch Hiker is a climbing-inspired adjustable-length leash and hitching system for ultimate connection versatility with your dog on the fly – from the crag to coffee shops and all the paths in between.

The adjustable strap shines equally whether being used as the handle for a hand-held leash, waist belt for a hands-free leash, or wrap for a hitch secured around a single tree or post. And, with 12 feet of rope to work with, you can fluidly shift from long line to short lead and all points in between with the ergonomic HitchLock™ rope adjuster. It's designed for hands-on adjustment that acts as a braking system when the rope is under tension. A durable stow bag keeps rope tails contained, marking its unrivaled portability and utility as a hitch and leash combo.

The Start of A Beautiful Belay-tionship: Much like the climbing gear that inspired the hardware and the mark of a trusted climbing belay partner, human participation is required. While the Hitch Hiker uses an auto-blocking technique to lock the rope under tension, slack must be let out and taken in by hand.

Dimensions: Rope length is 12 ft (3.65m); Stow Bag is 6 x 7 x 2 in (16 x 18.5 x 5 cm), Waist Belt Maximum Length 49"

A retractable leash without any spring action!

This has been a game changer for me. An easy way to have a hands-free leash that also can adjust size. The mechanisms have been without flaw and it is easy to use. The biggest challenges for me is coiling the lead back into the bag neatly where it doesn’t catch if I need to extend it again. Also, a little big of non-slip on the inner part of the “belt” would be great to keep the lead on my hips instead of it wanting to ride up to my waist. Most of the time I have pants with belt loops, so I put the clip ends through my front loops and it works out great.

I also use this in conjunction with the switchback double ended leash to form a coupler when I need both of my dogs on the hitchhiker.

Became the default leash on a 10 day cross-state adventure

This is my favorite leash. It's easy to handle a crazy dog in a variety of scenarios (long for trails, very short for crowded places) while keeping your hands free. As a woman, my hips are stronger than my arms, so my dog gets a lot less movement out of pulling, so I think it helps him realize pulling doesn't work. The pouch even has little pockets, right where you think they should be. The red color is easily visible (unless covered in mud) so people can see your dog is on leash. The waist loop is easy to secure around other things, like a tree or a bench. My only suggestion would be to somehow differentiate the leash clip from a backpack waist clip by feel. I accidentally unclipped the leash a few times when I thought I was unclipping my backpack.

    Great leash

Works great for walking and hiking. The belt adjusts easily and the leash locking mechanism is fantastic. Also have used as a hitch post with the belt around trees during breaks. I like that the harness clip is locking. Would be helpful if the harness clip was a little larger to make it easier to clip on and off. A thicker section of rope for the first few feet or handles would make it easier for handling in crowds etc. Have been using a loop tied in the rope as a handle.

    Peace of Mind

I've got a mighty 10lbs puller. We're working on some training to reduce that, but in the meantime, this setup puts my mind at ease. There's a reinforced cover over the metal clip and the belay system for the rope is one way unless released by constant pressure by the handler. I can also give my Iditarod wannabe some extra length in the field to romp and play.

    Easy to use

The Hitch Hiker Leash works great for us. As a service dog, Madison needs to just be tethered to me sometimes. This is an easy way to keep her on a leash and hands-free for me.
