After a couple seasons hiking with my favorite 55lb adventure buddy in the Switchbak, it's become the perfect single day hike pack. The contents you choose need to be a bit thought out due to limited pouch space and the need to balance the weight in each pouch; however, once you dial it in to your needs, the Switchbak really shines. I keep my guy equipped with basic essentials anytime we hit the trail. One side of this pack gets completely filled by his emergency evacuation sling. The other side includes a small diddy bag of first aid supplies tailored to him, a spare leash, a Ruffwear anti-smelly pack out bag for his poops, and the trail runner ultra light bowl for quick water/snack breaks. Other small items like an extra poop bag roll or a small hand towel could fit here as well, but I prefer it when the pouch I need to access most often isn't absolutely stuffed to capacity. Since this is my pup's day hiking pack, extra layers and boots aren't typically necessary, but they'd be held by me in my pack, since this isn't the most space friendly option. Food and water in my pack as well (for multiple day endeavors outdoors, see the Approach pack). The handle on the back is a requirement for me. Being able to pick up my pup in the mountains to either help him along tricky terrain or lift him away from possible danger is a must, and a poop bag dispenser fits nicely there as well!
